Pledging to Trinity
Tithing
Tithing, which is giving the first 10% of
your income back to God, has been upheld by the Episcopal Church as the minimum
standard of Christian giving. Most people who begin tithing find that God
blesses their lives in ways they could never have previously imagined. As an act
of thanks, tithing strengthens faith, builds trust in God, discourages debt and
encourages disciplined financial management. By putting God first in our
financial lives, tithing also helps us set good priorities and allows God to
provide for us. A number of us at Trinity have incredible stories of the ways
that God has begun to bless us as we have responded to God with increased
giving. The Episcopal Stewardship Office offers the following three steps to
tithing:
Become a First Fruits Giver:
Whenever you receive money, give thanks by giving something
back to God. Don’t worry about how much, just do this FIRST, before all of
your other spending.
Become a Percentage Giver
No matter how large or small, decide what percent of your
income you want to give to God and begin doing it.
Increase as You Are Able
Pray often. Talk your giving over with God so that God can
help you decide when to take risks and when to play it safe. If you are
married, pray and talk with your spouse about how God has blessed you and how
you can give back to God.
